Sony sees profit thanks to rising PlayStation 3 sales

Sony has revealed that its PlayStation arm has brought profits to the company, with news that sales of the PS3 are on the rise.

Last year, Sony's Networked Products & Services division, which houses the PS3 and PC devices, made a pretty poor loss of 624 million. This year, however, the division has made all-singing-and-dancing profits of 267 million.

While this doesn't take into account the damage the PSN hack will cause the company ? this will reportedly cost Sony 106 million ? it does prove that the popularity of the PS3 has never been greater, even if the rest of Sony has hit a bit of a slump.

As this was a profits report, Sony's statement regarding the PS3 is drier than one of James Bond's Martinis, but it did explain that at least this part of the company is doing well.

"A category that favourably impacted the change in segment operating results (excluding restructuring charges) was the game business, reflecting significant cost reductions of PlayStation 3 hardware and higher unit sales of PS3 software," the statement yawned.

Sony sales

Sales of the PS3 rose 0.4 per cent which brought 11.8 billion into Sony's coffers. The reasoning for this boost was down to better games coming out for the console and the arrival of Move.

It wasn't such good news for the PSP and the PS2. Both of these consoles suffered sales declines. In all, 6.4 million PS2s were sold (compared to 7.3 million the previous year) and 14.3 million PSPs (the year before this number was 13 million).

Sony is looking optimistically to the future when it comes to the PS3 and predicting it will sell 15 million PS3s this year ? which equates to a whole lot of new credit card details.

Toshiba's Qosmio X770 gaming laptop offers 'mind-blowing' 3D

Toshiba's latest gaming laptop, the Qosmio X770, promises super-speedy response times, mega-powerful processing and 3D visuals that will blow your mind - at least that's what Toshiba says.

With a 17.3-inch Full HD screen, the Toshiba Qosmio X770 rocks a quad-core Intel i7 processor alongside 8GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive.

The stereoscopic 3D graphics are powered by an Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M graphics card with 1.5GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory, which all sounds like a perfect 3D graphical storm.

Toshiba qosmio x770

You'll need active shutter specs, though, which link up to an infrared emitter in the screen's bezel.

Several-D

As well as 3D gaming, the laptop has a Blu-ray drive for 3D movie playback, can do 2- to 3D conversion and even has dual HD webcams so you can video chat in 3D, if that's the sort of thing that floats your boat.

Music and movie playback should be pretty nice with integrated Harman Kardon speakers and subwoofer working alongside the Dolby Digital Advanced Audio.

As well as USB 3.0, Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity, the laptop comes in a serious, manly design with red highlights, speaker grilles and mesh-effect patterns galore.

There's no word yet on the Qosmio X770 UK pricing, but the laptop is slated for a July 2011 release date, at which point we should find out how many notes it will set you back.

Phishing site found running on Sony server

A credit card phishing site has been found running on one of Sony's servers, adding to the company's already extensive security based headache.

Users are encouraged to apply for a credit card on the fake site, which lives at hdworld.sony.co.th; although the site doesn't mention Sony at all, the URL may encourage confidence in unwitting consumers.

The company is still reeling from its last security breach, with the PlayStation store not even back online yet and the PlayStation Network having enjoyed over three weeks of downtime over the last month after hackers broke in and compromised users' credit card and personal details.

One thing after another

We're sure Sony will be scrambling to remove the dodgy site as we speak as F-Secure, which discovered the phishing site, alerted the tech giant to its existence.

This latest revelation comes after the company was forced to take the PSN password reset site down because it required users' email addresses and dates of birth to verify their IDs; information that had already been compromised by the hackers.

It looks to us like Sony needs to take a long hard look at all its security processes before another breach tips consumers away from the company altogether.

Nintendo and Best Buy team up for SpotPass content in America

Its all coming together, well at least in America

Nintendos detailed plans for its free SpotPass content in other parts of the world and now for Americans at least we know now were theyll be able to get their SpotPass on. Starting from the magical date of June 7th, over 1,000 Best Buy stores in America will get wireless hotspots setup for Nintendo 3DS units. Not only will you be able use the Wi-Fi but there will also be movie trailers and gaming extras to be downloaded.

Exactly what these extras are and if the rest of the world will see such extras remains to be seen. Were hoping to see a similar plan in Australia soon.

Nintendo and Best Buy to Bring Custom Downloadable Content to Nintendo 3DS Owners

Nintendo 3DS Will Connect Automatically to Best Buy Wireless Hot Spots

REDMOND, Wash. & MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo and retail partner Best Buy are collaborating to give Nintendo 3DS™ owners customized, automatic wireless access at some 1,000 select Best Buy store locations nationwide beginning June 7. Once connected, the service will provide access to a variety of fun content via the system’s built-in Wi-Fi functionality, including the new SpotPass™ feature. The Best Buy service will also include exclusive offers as well as additional entertainment content such as gaming extras and movie trailers. Nintendo 3DS, which lets people see 3D visuals without the need for special glasses, launched March 27 at a suggested retail price of $249.99.

“Nintendo 3DS turns the page in portable gaming not just because of the stunning, glasses-free 3D visuals, but also in the way it keeps people connected to their friends, their games and their world,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “Best Buy provides a firsthand look at the platform with experts to help people understand everything it offers.”

“We want our customers to fully tap into the potential of their Nintendo 3DS device, so we’re pleased to offer free access to special Wi-Fi and SpotPass content in-store,” said Chris Homeister, senior vice president of entertainment for Best Buy. “As a retail partner for SpotPass, this is another way that we’re delivering best-in-class gaming experiences at our stores across the country.”

Remember that Nintendo 3DS features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo3ds.com.

Gary Marshall: Sony CEO shows how to react to PR disasters

Sony boss Howard Stringer is a funny guy.

His comments about the PlayStation Network outage - the result, let's not forget, of the biggest case of compromised customer data the internet has ever seen - made us laugh: a huge, hugely embarrassing and potentially brand-ruining disaster "is a hiccup in the road to a network future."

Is anybody else thinking of The Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail? "Tis but a scratch." Your arm's off! "No, it isn't."

I think we should be encouraging this kind of silliness.

Reality distortion

Remember Antennagate, when it turned out that iPhone signal bars dropped if anybody actually touched their phone? Did Steve Jobs stand up on stage, tearing at his turtleneck, apologising for Apple's very existence and begging the press for forgiveness? Of course he didn't.

What Jobs did was this. First, he denied that there was a problem. That went on for quite a while. Then, Jobs called a press conference at which he surprised everyone by pulling out a phone that Apple didn't make.

It was a BlackBerry, and stunned hacks watched in silence as Jobs hurled it to the floor, ground it under his heel and finally held the ruined remains to his ear. "Hello!" he bellowed, while doing a curious jig. "Hello? Hello hello hello hello?"

That's how I remember it, anyway. There was definitely something to do with BlackBerries.

Howard Stringer can't travel back in time and prevent the PSN hack from happening, and he can't stand up and say "I know! We're dicks!" for fear of sending Sony's share price towards the centre of the Earth.

Trapped between a rock and a hard place, Stringer hasn't chosen the rock - but he hasn't chosen the hard place either. No, he's too smart for that. He's opted out completely and gone for a mad place instead.

Let's have more.

Let's have Facebook paying PR firms to place stories that Google is a big bunch of privacy invaders.

Let's have O2 trying to persuade us that burglars stole their network.

And let's have HP pretending that it isn't using Thunderbolt because Thunderbolt is rubbish rather than because Apple got it first.

What do you mean they're doing that already?
