Developers get the latest 'iPhone 4S' from Apple

Apple has begun shipping a souped-up so-called "iPhone 4S" to games and app developers, in preparation for the forthcoming launch of the new iPhone 5.

A select few games devs have received the new Apple iPhone, to help them prepare the best titles possible for the iPhone 5 launch.

A5 chip in iPhone

9to5Mac reports that the new handsets feature Apple's super-nippy A5 chip, allowing developers to create the fastest and best-looking mobile phone games yet possible.

The A5 chip powers the Apple iPad 2 and is considerably faster than the A4 chip in the iPhone 4 and first-gen iPad.

9to5Mac's source claims that the "iPhone 4S" is almost identical to the current iPhone 4, apart from the inclusion of the newer, faster processor.

The "iPhone 4S" also apparently runs a specially adapted version of iOS4, created to work with the A5 chip in the iPhone.

The iPhone 5 is rumoured to be launching later this year, with no official word, as yet, from Apple.

News: Lovefilm responds to PS3 identity theft

"We're as frustrated as you are."

Lovefilm is "as frustrated" as PS3 owners about the forced temporary outage of its premium console service, the company has told Eurogamer.

And rest assured that your account information "completely safe and secure".

Nevertheless, monthly subscribers to Lovefilm on PS3 haven't been able to use the service since PSN went down on 21st April. Will there be some form of compensation? Doesn't look like it.

Flipnote Studio heads to the Nintendo 3DS

Nintendos great animation program gets another round in 3D

The Nintendo 3DS missed a lot of things at launch that the Nintendo DSi had. One of those things is great Flipnote Studio program that was made available on the DSi Shop. The app allowed you to, well, create Flipnote animations and there were some great ones produced.

Good news everyone! It’s coming back on the Nintendo 3DS. The new and updated program will be available for free again on the eShop, although it’s not known if it’ll be available at the eShop’s launch.

But it won’t be the same old program returning. Miyamoto, who revealed the news to French journalists, has said that Nintendo is looking at making it easier for friends to share their creations. However in typical Nintendo fashion, they are worried about how they will get around the whole "people drawing their doodle" doodles. Their words, I swear.

Free 3D Excitebike coming with 3DS update

Nintendo shows it is serious about pushing the 3DSs eShop

A Nintendo investor briefing shows the company is planning to lure people into updating their 3DS system by giving away Excitebike for free.

The copy of Excitebike will be downloadable for a limited time only after the May update through the Nintendo eShop and it will be a “3D Classic”, meaning a 3D enhanced version of the original NES game.

The freebie is not yet confirmed for outside of Japan but it seems likely we will get it as well given Nintendo’s past free offerings on the DSi (eg: Flipnote Studio).

Nintendo has also revealed it plans to expand the Virtual Console on the 3DS to include other platforms, which practically tells us we will see the GBA at some stage.

The 3DS’s big update will drop sometime next month and will include the other half of the system’s firmware we’ve been missing since launch – the web browser and the eShop.

PlayStation Network still down, no end in sight

The PlayStation network is still down, leaving Sony with a major embarrassment on its hands on a day when it announced the Sony Tablet S1 and Sony Tablet S2.

The latest tablets are being billed as a key new arrival for Sony, but some of their functionality is dependent on the Qriocity and PlayStation Network services.

But, both of these are currently down, with Sony's latest update not exactly providing major hope for a swift recovery.

Waiting

"I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online," Patrick Seybold wrote on the PlayStation blog.

"Unfortunately, I don't have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time. As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we're working to get them back online quickly.

"We'll keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience."

Of course, patience is not something that the gaming community is particularly renowned for having, and the timing could not be much worse as Sony tries to show off its cloud-based tablet future.

Hackers offering to sell PSN credit card details

In the ongoing Sony PR nightmare that is the PlayStation Network hack, the latest rumours suggest that hackers are trying to sell the credit card details of 2.2 million PSN users.

Not only that, the hackers are also alleged to have offered to sell back the data to Sony, with the group claiming that Sony refused to buy back the list.

Sony offered PSN data?

The New York Times reports that Sony was offered the chance to buy back the information for around $100k but that the company has ignored the requests.

Sony has refuted the paper's claims.

"To my knowledge there is no truth to the report that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list," said SCEA PR boss Patrick Seybold.

"The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken."

Kevin Stevens, senior threat researcher at the security firm Trend Micro, told the New York Times that he had seen talk of the database on numerous hacker forums online.

"Sony is saying the credit cards were encrypted, but we are hearing that the hackers made it into the main database, which would have given them access to everything, including credit card numbers," added security consultant Mathew Solnik, from iSEC Partners

Nintendo details and dates Super Mario 3DS

It was, of course, inevitable that Nintendo's chubby Italian plumber would grace the company's new 3DS handheld, with the company revealing the latest game details and plans for the upcoming Super Mario 3DS.

The main thing you need to know is that feted game designer Shigeru 'father of Mario' Miyamoto says his latest game is a cross between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64, and ? most importantly ? will be releasing later in 2011.

3DS launch missed

It is a shame that Nintendo couldn't have timed the release of the new Mario game to coincide with last month's launch of the new 3DS console, though fans will still be celebrating the fact that they will be able to play the new title later this very year.

Miyamoto told our sister site Edge that the game is "a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64" and that it will be playable at E3 2011 in June.

In terms of 3D gameplay, Miyamoto added: "For example, the floors floating in space: in 2D it's difficult to judge the distance, but in 3D it's really easy."

Miyamoto confirmed that his new game is "completely original, and coming this year."

E3 2011 runs from June 7 to 9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. TechRadar will of course be bringing you all the biggest gaming hardware and tech news directly from the show, as it breaks.

New Mario Olympic title

In other Mario news, Sega and Nintendo have also announced the new Mario and Sonic game for the Wii and on the Nintendo 3DS, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, set to feature over 50 original Olympic themed games including athletics, aquatics, table tennis, football and horse-rising.

"Mario and Sonic have had a phenomenally successful partnership and we are extremely proud to be able to recreate this once again with Nintendo and ISM for the London 2012 Olympic Games," said Naoya Tsurumi, Chairman for SEGA of America and SEGA Europe.

Expect that title to arrive at some point early 2012.
