Major gaming publishers slash iOS game prices

A host of major mobile gaming publishers have slashed the prices of premium games on the Apple App Store to 59p this week.

Clearly the release of the Verizon iPhone 4 in the US this week has shaken up the mobile gaming market a little.

EA leads the charge in this month's App Store bargain drive, with other publishers such as Capcom, Namco, Sega and Gameloft cutting prices of premium games to 59p.

Mobile gaming specialist Gameloft announced via its Facebook page that 13 of its games would be 59p until Valentine's Day, with fans allowed to vote for the 14th game they wanted to see made available at the discounted price.

iOS sweetheart deals

EA is also offering 'sweetheart deals' with loads of its iOS games slashed down to 59p, especially for Valentine's Day.

Of course, if you are forced to purchase cut-price iOS games to celebrate Valentine's Day, then you might want to re-assess your life choices. That aside, we cannot argue with lots of decent games at bargain bin prices.

Particularly when they are from the likes of Japanese gaming legend Capcom ? with that publisher cutting the price of its entire iOS game line-up ? with gems such as Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter IV and Devil May Cry: Refrain ? slashed to 59p a pop.

Not to be outdone, Sega is offering 16 titles including Super Monkey Ball, Chu Chu Rocket, and Golden Axe at discounted prices, while Namco has cut the price of 15 of its titles on the App Store.

At that price, it's almost criminal for any iPhone gamer to not own all of the above-mentioned titles.

Two Worlds II! Fight Night! Pokemon!

This week sees (should see... maybe) the release of fantasy role-playing game Two Worlds II. Even as we type this, we're still not 100 per cent sure it'll see the light of day in the UK this week. We know it's supposed to launch as an Amazon.co.uk exclusive on Tuesday, but given the many insufferable delays seen so far, the truth may be different. Until then, let's just give TopWare the benefit of the doubt, shall we?

Elsewhere, Ubisoft launches the high definition remake of cult classic Beyond Good & Evil on Xbox Live Arcade. The much-loved adventure game has been given a makeover, and Ubisoft has stressed the importance of sales for the quiet Beyond Good & Evil 2, but will the end result blow us away?

Meanwhile, shop shelves will bulge from an eclectic line-up of new releases. EA Sports' brutal Fight Night Champion aims to tell a story as well as land haymakers. It features over 50 fighters, but will you be knocked out?

Is 'Halo 5' a Microsoft in-joke?

A Halo 5 logo has been spotted on an Xbox 360 screen at Microsoft's Redmond, Washington offices, which begs the question: whatever happened to Halo 4?

Channel 4 News managed to spot the Halo 5 logo on a recent press visit to Microsoft HQ.

However, there are some in the games industry that suspect this is little more than a clever in-joke from the folks at Microsoft. If so, we don't seem to be laughing.

Be a part of Halo history

What we do know is that Bungie is no longer looking after development duties on Microsoft's killer franchise. That's being taken care of by (ex Timeshift developers) 343 Industries.

As you can see from the recent Halo related job listings on the company's site 343 Industries seems to be the place to work, if you want to be "a part of Halo history."

So Channel 4 managed to spot a Halo 5 logo, alongside a logo for Project Gotham Racing and "Grandma's Room." Does this actually mean anything? Does it mean Microsoft is planning on releasing a proper Halo sequel soon?

We've asked Microsoft. Clearly we expect to receive a 'no comment' at any point soon. But we have to ask, because this is how things work. Sometimes they tell us things. Often they don't.

Halo 5 - an in-joke?

Tim Ingham, editor over on CVG is convinced that, "the 'Halo 5' logo would appear to be a clear in-joke at Microsoft ? a nod to a far-off future."

The CVG editor thinks: "the next 'proper' Halo is, arguably, going to be 'Halo 4' ? although if it's got an actual numeral in its title I'll eat my Master Chief figurine.

"Still, it's exciting to see that even with a jovial hat on, Microsoft clearly has long-term plans for the core story."

You can see more on 343 Industries plans for the future of Halo over on CVG, with the games site convinced that the next Halo, whatever it may be called, will not be a 'side story' game along the lines of Halo: Combat Evolved

One way or the other, Microsoft really has to ensure that the next game in its killer franchise blows us all away. Otherwise, we might just spend all of our time playing and talking about Uncharted 3 instead?

Australian Nintendo 3DS launch line up confirmed, alls not well

There will be no Pilotwings Resort or Steel Diver on launch at this stage

Nintendo Australia has confirmed the first day releases for the Nintendo 3DS launch in Australia on March 31st. The only two games from Nintendo themselves to hit stores on day one will be the three versions of Nintendogs + Cats and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition.

Nintendo have said that the dates for Pilotwings Resort and Steel Diver will be “confirmed at a later date”. Nintendo also confirmed that its titles will have the same RRP as Nintendo DS titles at $69.95, however you can expect many cheaper prices to hit around launch as stores vie for your dollar.

Nintendo Australia’s press release does not specify which third party games we are getting on launch day either, but as most retailers are showing dates for those games, it’s safe to assume they are locked in.

With Europe getting Pilotwings Resort day one, we’re a little perplexed as to why Australia is not. We must admit that delays this early makes us feel a little... let’s use the word ‘uneasy’.

Ill tell the children, theyll be no Hospital.

News: Gears of War 3 beta maps revealed

Facebook vote to determine map fate.

At a hands-on event in San Francisco yesterday Epic Games revealed and detailed the maps you'll be playing in the Gears of War 3 beta, set to launch this spring.

Checkout is, according to Eurogamer's man in San Fran Christian Donlan, is "cruel, claustrophobic, and daringly small: a tight collection of aisles and corridors surrounded by ruptured shelving and tills, and lit by shafts of light pouring in from the glass ceiling."

Thrashball is "a bit bigger, and not quite as open-plan as the whole sports stadium gig suggests". "Rising up out of battered team locker rooms, you'll find yourself on a pitch criss-crossed with plenty of low cover, while a lopsided Jumbotron hangs overhead."

HTC investing in smartphone OnLive gaming platform

HTC has announced plans to invest $40m (25m) in OnLive, a company that specialises in cloud-based gaming.

The move could see HTC dipping its toe firmly into the gaming waters, with handsets like the Sony Eriscson Xperia Play hoping to explode the mobile gaming market this year.

Excitement abounds

HTC told us that it's very excited about the investment, and that "more news will follow next week."

Could we be in line for an exciting gaming announcement from the company at Mobile World Congress?

According to HTC spokesperson Maggie Cheng, the company's investment will "strengthen its gaming capabilities and help HTC tap into increasing demand for games on smartphones."

Good plan

We've already seen HTC move in the direction of the cloud with its HTCSense.com Mobile-Me-alike service.

Given the company's investment in its on-handset software, it would make sense for HTC to get involved in mobile gaming which is already a huge market; plus it could help the company differentiate itself in the very-samey Windows Phone 7 market.

Exciting times ahead, we hope; we'll bring you all the details next week.

MWC 2011: Can the Xperia Play succeed?

Sony Ericsson's recent recovery stalled in the 4th quarter when results were weaker than expected.

President and chief executive, Bert Nordberg announced that Sony Ericsson sold 10 million Android devices last year, representing 50 per cent of its total unit shipment volume in 2010.

However, he also admitted that poor sales late in the year were at least partly due to its product momentum fizzling out.

Can the handsets announced on the eve of Mobile World Congress help turn the Swedish-Japanese company's fortunes around?

At the packed Sunday press conference, the 50/50 joint venture announced four new devices: Arc, Neo, Pro and the Xperia Play, also dubbed the 'PlayStation Phone.'

Of these, the Play was by far the most anticipated. The company couldn't stress enough that the PlayStation-branded Xperia Play was firstly a smartphone but also features a console-class gaming experience. Would this dedicated gaming mobile differentiate their products from rival manufacturers?

Good progress

Paul Brown, director of user experience practice at strategy analytics said these handsets represent good progress for Sony Ericsson. "The dedicated gaming controls of the Xperia Play provides a superior gaming experience compared to other mobile devices on the market today."

But he warns that Nokia has previously failed with dedicated gaming phones, the N-gage and N-Gage QD. "If Sony Ericsson is to succeed, not only do they need to provide quality hardware but also support it with superior games that are equal to dedicated portable gaming consoles such as the Nintendo DS."

Technology analyst at uSwitch, Ernest Doku, told TechRadar: "Sony Ericsson has finally delivered on the promise of bringing a phone to market bearing the PlayStation brand, but it arrives at a time when the landscape of mobile gaming has changed completely. With titles like Angry Birds and Cut The Rope thriving on their simplicity, low cost and 'quick-fix' gameplay, a device pitched as 'hardcore' like the Xperia Play may lack appeal."

Xperia Play games

"A platform lives and dies by the quality of the games, and the Xperia Play has to be careful not to rely too heavily on the Android Market's wares and deliver unique experiences via PlayStation Suite," added Doku.

Users will be able to access applications via Android Market as well as game content via PlayStation Suite. According to the company, there will be a total of 50 games at launch from 20 partners including Electronic Arts, Glu Mobile and Gameloft.

"The performance of the Xperia Play is impressive given that it only packs a 1Ghz single-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor in comparison to the growing trend of dual-core chipsets, said Stuart Robinson, director of handset component technologies at Strategy Analytics. "The graphics capability is provided by an Adreno GPU."

The 4-inch multi-touch screen features a 5.1 megapixel camera and runs on Android Gingerbread (2.3).

"I think it is a niche market but there is no other device out there currently with the same capability," added Robinson. "The only risk is who it's targeted at, which seems to be primarily teenage males."

Whilst Sony Ericsson gave no mention of pricing, it did announce an exclusive partnership with Verizon Wireless for the Xperia Play available this spring.

News: Ono: Street Fighter III scared off gamers

SFIV intended as a "happy class reunion".

Street Fighter III closed off Capcom's brawling franchise to all but the most experienced players, leading to a more inclusive revamp for the fourth entry in the series, producer Yoshinori Ono has revealed.

Speaking in a typically insightful interview with Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, Ono explained that, like his own game Shadows of Rome, the third entry in the long-running franchise was made with only die-hard fans in mind.

"They were also the loudest people who made their voices heard," he explained. "I really understood how they felt, so I thought their voices were everything. But I didn't realise there were other people to whom the game could not resonate with at all until just about four or five years ago."

Blizzard CEO spills beans on new game

The CEO of World of Warcraft developer Blizzard has been discussing the studio's next major project.

With a title still to be announced, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime was still happy to talk about the developer's next major game at a public event in Las Vegas this week.

The game is something which the MMO-specialists at Blizzard have been working on for years already.

The Blizzard CEO said of the mystery game:"Without giving away any details, we have some of our most experienced MMO developers, people who spent years working on the World of WarCraft team, working on this project.

Not a WoW sequel

The Blizzard CEO continued: "We're really trying to leverage all the lessons we learned through the years. Some of which we were able to address in World of WarCraft and others that maybe because of the design decisions we've made, you just can't address.

"So we're kind of taking a step back with all that knowledge to make something that's completely new and fresh. We're not trying to make a WoW sequel."

Morhaime revealed little more about the studio's new game, other than to add the somewhat meaningless platitude: "To break the mold, sometimes you have to start over."

More interestingly, the Blizzard boss did talk at some length about his love for iPhone Scrabble-clone Words with Friends.

Although we cannot imagine the WoW developer's next game is going to be an iPhone-exclusive title, it's certainly interesting to hear him talk about the latest trends in mobile social gaming.

Stay tuned for updates on Blizzard's next game as and when we get them.
